In the spring of 2012, a horticulture graduate named Oliver Marsh knocked on a neighbor's door in Kew, south-west London, and offered to redesign their overgrown Victorian rear garden for the cost of materials. The neighbor said yes. It took twelve weeks, three friends with wheelbarrows.

I started Greenth in someone else's back garden with borrowed tools and a second-hand copy of Beth Chatto's The Dry Garden. I had no clients, no business plan, and no particularly good reason to believe it would work. What I had was a conviction — borrowed partly from Chatto, partly from my botany professor, partly from watching my grandmother move through her Hampshire garden as though she were listening to it — that good design begins.
